PERFECTION

"James! Open the damn door!" I keep knocking. I don't care if his neighbors come complaining later... It's not my problem.
Finally, I hear his voice screaming above the loud music coming from inside his apartment. "Stop that! You won, I'll open the door!" I stop, listening to the noise of the door being unlocked. "Happy now? What the hell are you doing here?"
I look him right in the eye. "I came here to demand an explanation!" I cross my arms over my chest.
He looks right back, completely dumbfounded. "Come again?"
"An explanation! I demand one." I didn't budge. "Don't you think I deserve one?"
"There's nothing to explain. You and me: it's over. Goodbye, have a nice day!" And he closed the door right on my face.
Oh, no you didn't! Fuming, I started ringing the doorbell. "JAMES! Come back here, RIGHT NOW!"
He re-opened the door quickly. "Shut the fuck up! What do you want? Waking up the entire building?"
I glared at him. "If necessary." I walked forward forcing him to let me in. "Could you please lower the music? Please?"
James turned his back to me. "No. I like it this way and this is still my house." His house was a mess.
While following him to the living room I noticed the pizza boxes scattered all around the floor. Apparently he had decided to start living there. "Then tell me why? Why have you decided to break up?"
He ran his hands over his head. "Why keep beating around the bush? Can't you just move on?"
"You don't make any sense. Everything was alright a week ago and then you decide to finish it."
"So you want a reason? Easy: I should never, ever, started dating you! And you are better off without me."
This is so cliché. If it wasn't happening to me, I'd start laughing. But this, this is not funny. "No. I know you better than that!"
"Wrong! You thought you knew me."
"Liar..." I swear I'm on the verge of tears. "Then why not earlier? Why did you even ask me out?"
He avoided my stare. "Obviously, I was not right in my mind."
"You're so stupid!"
"Guess it's part of my personality..."
"You were nothing like this when I first met you." Now, I was the one avoiding looking directly at him. "You know, I never thought you were like this!"
"You see! That's the problem! You thought I was perfect!" He turned off the music and got closer. "But I've got news for you: I'm not! I kept trying, for you. But what I am it's not enough for your family."
"I never said you were perfect. And what my family thinks it's not important!"
"Yet you acted like I was. I never thought I'd meet someone like you, who made me feel not so lonely." He cupped my face and forced me to look into his silver eyes - now as gray as the stormiest sky. "Just by being at your side I forgot all my loneliness."
"Then why not telling me? Even if you say I'm wrong I can see in your eyes that finishing is not what you wanted..."
"Your parents were hoping to meet some Perfect Guy. Not me." He lowered his head. "They were disappointed."
"Who said I needed Perfect Guy? If they wanted him, then they'd wait forever... No one's perfect. Once they get to know you better, I'm sure disappointed it's the last thing they'll be. Especially when you're the one I love." I started walking away. "I only care about you. Who do you care about?"
"You."
"Then my parents won't care." I open the door. "If it's that way I want to let you know..." I get out and shoot him a small smile. "I'll keep holding on to us. To you." He looked like hell. "If you want to ask me to get you back, you know that I will." He sighed in relief. "Will you pick me up tomorrow for school?"
He smiled weakly, but meaning it. "Of course. As usual."
"Then... Goodbye, James."
He whispered in my direction. "Love you."
Smiling, I closed the door. "Love you too."
